David Lutrick - Burl-top boxes
Boxes made from a very burly slab of big leaf maple from southern Oregon. The colors and patterns in the box walls are caused by spalting, an invasion of the wet wood by several waves of fungi. After the wood dries, the fungi die, leaving the wood softer in spots. These soft spots may sand away more, leaving a somewhat rough surface. The interior of the boxes has not been finished to avoid any odors or tastes from a finish.
The rectangular boxes are all close to 7 x 5 x 7 inches in size.
The round boxes are 4.5 inches in diameter and 5 inches tall.
