Lee H. Rentz - PRAIRIE SMOKE
We hiked up into the clouds on Mount Townsend, on a day when we had expected to have some views out to Puget Sound. Instead, the mountain was socked in all day, and every wildflower and every leaf picked up little droplets of cloud condensation. It was magical! In fact, I’ve never had such a wonderful day of closeup photography, when every subject was wonderfully photogenic against the light, cloudy sky.
My favorite common name for this flower is Prairie Smoke, but it also goes by the name of Old Man’s Whiskers, and is one of the rare plants that thrives from Washington State to Northern Canada and east to Michigan and New York. I think it is a truly elegant plant.
