David Lutrick - Madrone salad bowl with scalloped rim
Madrone is one of my favorite woods to turn, but special care has to be taken, as the wood shrinks much more across the grain than with the grain, causing stress that cracks the wood. To minimize this, the rough-turned bowls are boiled for several hours, then set aside for several months to dry. After I finished turning the basic shape on this bowl, I added a band of decoration at the rim. The bowl is 8 inches in diameter and 9 inches deep and is finished on the inside with walnut oil.
