Lee H. Rentz - ICE IN GREEN AND WHITE
There is a place in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where I travel to see an ephemeral display of incredible beauty. I pull micro spikes over my snow boots and set off through the forest to a place known as the Eben Ice Caves, at which water seeping through porous sandstone freezes in crystalline curtains up to 12 feet high. These ice curtains are shades of green and white and blue and yellow, depending on minerals in the rock and how the light transmits through the translucent crystals. It is a spectacular formation to walk behind, under a rock overhang, with softly diffused and colorful light; it is a reminder of nature’s power to renew our sense of wonder.
