“The singular Lip is the feeding and sexual organ of the mollusk. The colors come from food byproduct, But the dichroic sparkle comes from consumption of the heavy metal titanium, a rare mineral, but it's there, with more coming into the waterways from industrial and nuclear waste. The mollusk uses everything to help it survive and a little bit of flash helps attract a mate. The Splines are the external spine of the shell.. Splines give the shell more support, without taking up space inside. They also are colored the same as the Lip, or at least color coordinated. The horns are to anchor the shell in good feeding grounds, while holding fast during heavy current changes.” From ”Seashell Museum Catalog''
Have a look, push the zoom button. Peek inside the casework windows, with not the greatest of clarity. The reason is for the protection of the shells. And makes it that much harder to see.
That is what gets the juices flowing, It gets to the voyeur in all of us.
