Blowing Sands Glass - NW Modern Vase
I’ve blown and sculpted the NW Modern vases to be high shouldered, with a silhouette strong enough to stand on its own or set off an arrangement of branches with spring blossoms. I’ve signed and dated each on the bottom.
Glass color invites so many moods that I’ve been able to experiment…

1-1. The “Summer” pattern is bright and inviting high-contrast colors of lemon yellow, gold topaz, grass green, turquoise, and ruby bring to mind days of dappled summer sunshine. The inside is blue with transparent chartreuse glass edging the opening. Measurements: Height 9”, diameter at opening 2 ½”, diameter across at shoulder 5”, diameter at base 3 1/4”
1-2. The teal “Lagoon” vase has the calm of an ancient undisturbed pond with a layering of clear glass over blue-teal and a spots of a deep green. The interior is a bright contrasting chartreuse green, with a black edging around the opening. Measurements: Height 8 ¾”, diameter at opening 2 ½”, diameter across at shoulder 4 5/8”, diameter at base 3”
1-3. The “Impatiens” Vase is violet, plum, and fuchsia. Wandering through a green house full of impatiens and you might find colors this bright. I’ve given the colors a very slight twist so there is some movement without blurring of color. The inside is white and top edge is wrapped in fuchsia. Measurements: Height 9”, diameter at opening 2 5/8”, diameter across at shoulder 5”, diameter at base 3”
1-4. “Cozy Quilt” Vase. I’ve applied the glass to get a softer effect when making this vase. Hyacinth violet, amethyst, and turquoise were layered over white in a patchwork, then lapis blue spots were added. An edge of transparent blue glass wraps round the opening. The interior is a feathery white. Measurements: Height 9”, diameter at opening 2 1/8”, diameter across at shoulder 5 1/4”, diameter at base 3 3/8”
1-5. “The colors in this vase are reminiscent of an Evening in the Garden: Blues and greens, some aventurine spots that are sparkly gold at the top of the vase and a paler pinkish color near the base. Measurements: Approximately 9 3/4" tall and 4 3/8" at the shoulder and 4 ¼” at the top
1-6. For the “Pheasant” pattern a good twist gave the glass color in this vase the look of feathers. Brick red, gold aventurine, The top is edged in transparent amber glass. The interior is a feathery white. Measurements: Height 8”, diameter at opening 3 3/4”, diameter across at shoulder 4 1/2”, diameter at base 3”
1-7. This “Rainbow” vase features a mix of transparent colors over a feathering of enamel white glass. Cobalt blue, crimson red, pink, amber, emerald, violet, plum, burnt-orange and chartreuse are accented with sparkling spots of gold aventurine. An edge of black glass encircles the top opening. Measurements: Height 8 7/8”, diameter at opening 2 ½”, diameter across at shoulder 4 5/8”, diameter at base 3”
1-8. “Round vase in Yellow” This is a hand-blown glass vase in transparent chartreuse and amber. Measurements: Approximately 8" tall and 2 1/4" across the opening and about 7" at the widest.
