Steve Stegall - Alaskan Fossil Walrus Tusk Vessels
My favorite mediums to work are the fossil materials from the far north of Alaska. Fossil walrus tusk is found in the middens, or “bone-yards” left by the ancestors of the Yupik peoples of today. Finding and digging or diving for this material provides a livelihood for many people who live in isolated areas with few sources of income. Fossil mammoth tusk is found inland in the tundra where it has been buried and preserved in the permafrost for millenia. The result is a beautiful material that glows with natural colorations created by the minerals that have been absorbed over time. I have discovered that these precious vessels show the beauty of these tusks in a manner that I hope please you as much as it does me.
