I support positive and responsible stewardship of the biosphere we share with all life on this unique and beautiful planet. Two years ago I shifted my artistic practice away from a focus on painting and human centered subjects and stories. My painting practice has been a successful one. I have work in the permanent collections of two American museums, and I have good representation in France. But, since the election, the focus on human subjects really began to take its toll on my mental health, so I took some time to reexamine my artistic practice, and what I was doing in my work to contribute to the well-being of our species. Children have always been important in my work, and I was already thinking a lot about the climate emergency we are living through and the extinction event we are witnessing. So, three years ago, I shifted my subject matter away from the human face and story we are all so accustomed to seeing and hearing, and I have focused my work on animals and the natural world. The decision to work in clay sprang organically from this shift, and almost immediately I realized what a powerful tool clay could be to promote something positive around this conversation about climate change.
