The frustrating part about painting is that there is no way to paint everything worth painting; you catch what you can and let most of the world just pass by. Painting is a translation of color and light and emotion to a more permanent form that you can hang on your wall. It is a matter of subtracting and distilling until what is left is hopefully what I mean to say about a thing or animal. I live in the Columbia River Gorge and much of what I paint are the animals, plants and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. I chose oil paints because of their depth and versatility. I hope to try watercolors soon because I believe they would be a lot easier to take hiking with me.
