After graduating from college I moved up to Seattle on a bit of a whim and ended up becoming part of an amazing scientific community at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, spending a decade doing clinical research and then another two decades with the Science Education Partnership. During my time with SEP I began pursuing a second career in photography. I focused on science and technology stock imagery for several years before stumbling upon what would ultimately become my passion – merging my wildlife photography, usually but not exclusively birds, with the infinite creativity of Photoshop. My intent is to never "fake" a scene or create something that does not exist in the natural world. Most images in my collection begin with a single photo, and then I painstakingly remove the background and distracting elements. Next I create a new background using multiple layers of complimentary colors, textures, photos, and natural elements, along with a little magic and a lot of heart, fashioning "portraits" of my subjects, highlighting their personality, mood, or humor. There is nothing better than spending as many rainy/sunny/stormy/frigid/drippy/muddy/beautiful days as possible with my camera and Hubble (my trusty 500mm lens) photographing the beauty and wonder of nearby places in the Pacific Northwest, as well as far-away places that I am blessed to be able to visit, and then turning these images into one of a kind portraits of my subjects. I do hope you enjoy my work.
